Pirates pre-season football team ranks fourth in CIF Division 4

Paramount High’s football team ranched no. four in CIF Southern Section’s Division 4, according to an Aug. 19 list of top 11-player teams.

Unfortunately, news about the Friday, Aug. 23, varsity football game wasn’t available.

The Pirates reportedly ranks 43rd in the state. Their Friday, Aug. 23, opponents, the Mira Costa Mustangs, rank 238.

As for the CIF’s 11-man preseason football top 10 list, Paramount’s long-time rival team Downey didn’t make the list.

The other top three teams were Villa Park, Palos Verdes and Camarillo.

Following fourth-place Paramount were South Hills, San Juan Hills, Roosevelt, Loyola, Hart and Damien.

Last year

The Pirates made round 1 of the CIF Southern Section brackets. Paramount High handily defeated El Modena 49-7. Unfortunately, fortune swung the other say during the quarter finals, with Grace Brethren defeating Paramount 41-12.

Forget objectivity: Journal staffers have their fingers crossed for PHS to make the finals in 2019.

Junior varsity this year

The junior varsity team was scheduled to face the Bishop Amat Lancers on Monday, Aug. 29. News about that game was not available.

The JV team lost the thursday, Aug. 22, game against Mira Costa. The score: 38-43, Mira Costa’s favor.
