March was proclaimed as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month by the City Council at its March 1 meeting.

The observation celebrates the contributions that those with such disabilities make to our communities and raises awareness about the inclusion of people in all areas of life. The City launched the adaptive recreation program for special-needs families last year with seven events, and more activities are scheduled this year.

Accepting the proclamation was Lourdes Perez of the Latinas Arts Foundation who has worked extensively with the local developmentally disabled community, specifically by teaching folklorico dance classes.
